Join us for an excursion through the agricultural heartland of Banderas Bay. This 6-hour tour begins in the Human Connections office in Bucerías with coffee and an introduction. From there, we will travel inland through the picturesque countryside, stopping at a historic town on the way to our first visit with a local artisan in their workshop. There, you will hear their story and receive an interactive lesson in their area of expertise. Possible visits include a potter’s workshop, the home of a master tamale maker, or a florist’s tropical orchard filled with exotic fruits and flowers.

Your trip will end with an authentic, farm-to-table meal at a family-owned ranch where you will learn about the agricultural lifestyle of the region and make your own tortillas and fresh cheese.

Our Heartland Traditions Tour is perfect for travelers who are eager to learn through a hands-on experience and explore the diverse and vibrant livelihoods of Mexico that exist outside the touristic areas.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who will I meet on the tour?

We collaborate with a small group of artisans and small business owners, ranging from owners of a sustainable ranch and restaurant near the town of San Juan de Abajo who make fresh cheese and tortillas to ceramicists and a family with an orchard filled with tropical flowers and fruits.

I’ve already been on a tour. How can I be sure to visit different families this time?

When making your reservation online you will have the opportunity to specify if you have already attended a tour before and provide more details about your preferences so that, based on the availability of our partners, we can design the perfect experience for you.

How many people will be on the tour?

Our tour sizes vary each week. The minimum for a tour is four people and groups can be as large as 18. However, the average group is about 6-10 participants.

Is this tour a good fit for families?

Absolutely! Since we typically visit families of artisans, it’s a perfect experience for families of travelers, as shared values and experiences are often discussed. Also, this activity is wonderful for young kids, who get to see a more intimate side of Mexico and apply their creativity.  When booking your tour, please indicate the ages of your children so that we can specialize the tour for them! If you do, we make sure to visit clients who have interactive trades so that your kids can get involved. See our TripAdvisor page for feedback from families.

How much walking does the tour entail?

A comfortable van is provided as transportation for the group during our tours so there is minimal walking.  Our tours are fit for people of all ages and activity levels and can be customized to meet any physical restrictions.

Can I pay in cash?

Yes you can! We ask that you please notify our tour director, Maya (maya@humanconnections.org), if you’d like to pay in cash. Cash payments should be paid at our office up to 48 hours before the tour date. We accept US dollars considering the exchange rate of the day of payment.

Can I bring donations?

Human Connections does not accept in-kind donations for the families we visit during tours. Our tours are meant to be educational, create conversation, and financially and emotionally empower the families with whom we work. We hope you will leave with new ideas about charity, need, and responsible travel.

That said, we collaborate with some incredible local organizations that, among other things, ethically channel in-kind donations to local people. Human Connections is more than happy to accept your in-kind donations in our Bucerias office and bring them to these partners, which include  Entreamigos and Ahora es Tiempo de Dar. We also encourage you to visit these organizations directly. What other questions do you have?
