Don Emiliano & Doña Berta
Don Emiliano and Doña Berta are originally from the southern state of Oaxaca, though they now live in a small town outside of Puerto Vallarta with their three children and three grandchildren. As part of the Mixtec indigenous group, both learned the traditional craft of basket weaving at a very young age. Though Mixtec baskets (tenates) are traditionally woven from palm fronds, Emiliano and Berta now use brightly colored synthetic materials to enhance their products’ resilience and versatility. These highly skilled artisans have been weaving for over thirty years and are dedicated to their craft—weaving one product can take anywhere from two hours to two days depending on its size and intricacy. Emiliano and Berta can work with any number of colors and patterns to customize orders for purchase.
